About UPS & Our Culture
At 4:00 AM, most of the city is still asleep. Inside the UPS fulfillment center, our Preload Workers are already deep into the most technically demanding sort shift of the day — building the outbound package car loads that every UPS driver will depend on for their entire 9 to 10 hour route. The preload is not a casual warehouse shift. It is a precision operation where the sequence of packages inside a delivery vehicle determines whether a driver runs 180 stops efficiently or wastes an hour searching for missequenced freight. Our preload worker jobs attract the most method-focused, detail-driven associates in the building — and reward them with an early finish time that leaves the entire day free by 9:00 AM.
What Our Team Says (Employee Reviews)
"The preload is where you learn what UPS is really about. Loading a package car correctly is a genuine skill — it takes 30 to 60 days to master your cars and another six months to feel truly fast. But once you own your cars, the satisfaction of a driver pulling out clean every morning because of the load you built is something I chase every shift. I start at 4:00 AM, I am home by 9:00 AM, I pick my kids up from school in the afternoon, and my Teamsters medical plan covers my whole family. The best preload worker job in the region, and it is not close." - Current Preload Worker, Raleigh, NC.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
As a UPS Preload Worker, you sort inbound overnight volume and build outbound package car loads during the 4:00 AM to 9:00 AM window inside our fulfillment center, using the UPS load chart, DIAD scanning reference, and belt sequencing system to position every package in its correct vehicle shelf position before the driver arrival window opens at 8:45 AM.
- Sequence Load Construction: Build package car loads in exact stop-by-stop delivery order using the UPS Electronic Daily Delivery Record (eDDR) — placing every package label-out on the correct shelf position so the driver pulls shelf A-1 first and shelf E-5 last without ever searching the vehicle for missequenced freight, achieving the load quality standard that protects both customer service and driver safety on the road.
- Air Package Priority Handling: Identify UPS Next Day Air (NDA), 2nd Day Air (2DA), and Saturday Air packages at the belt induction point using the red-banded air label, loading them into designated air-committed shelf positions in the package car before any ground package enters the vehicle — air misloads trigger automatic service failure credits that cost the facility thousands of dollars per incident.
- Pre-Driver Departure Audit: Walk each assigned package car in the final 10 minutes before driver arrival, scanning a sample of shelf positions against the eDDR to verify sequence integrity, catching any last-minute misloads before the driver checks in and the car leaves the building for the day.
Benefits & Perks
UPS Preload Workers earn the Teamsters contractual base wage plus an early-morning shift differential applied to every hour worked before 8:00 AM — one of the strongest total hourly rates among all UPS part-time associate shift windows. Full Teamsters medical, dental, and vision benefits, pension accrual at the contractual service credit rate, paid personal days, and UPS Earn & Learn tuition deposits of up to $5,250 annually are all included. Your shift ends before 9:00 AM — leaving school drop-off, college classes, and afternoon careers completely unaffected.
