About UPS & Our Culture
The weight of the world's commerce passes through UPS freight facilities every day — and our Freight Handlers are the skilled workers who move it. Heavy, irregularly shaped, and high-value shipments require the kind of careful, method-based handling that only proper training and real experience can build. At UPS, we invest in our freight handler workforce more heavily than any competitor in the parcel industry — because we understand that a damaged shipment is a broken promise, and broken promises destroy the trust that 117 years of service have built. If you are searching for freight handler jobs near me that pay a union premium and treat physical skill as a real professional asset, UPS is where that search ends.
What Our Team Says (Employee Reviews)
"Freight handling at UPS is skilled work — people underestimate how much knowledge goes into moving different types of freight safely and without damage. UPS trained me on team lifting, mechanical assist devices, and special handling protocols for fragile and high-value items. The premium pay over standard sort work is significant, the union protection is real, and I have not had a lost-time injury in four years because the safety methods actually work. Best freight handler job I have had in this industry." - Current Freight Handler, Houston, TX.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
As a UPS Freight Handler, you manage the physical movement of heavy, oversized, and special-handling shipments through our fulfillment center — executing safe team lifts, operating mechanical assist equipment, and ensuring every piece of non-conveyable freight reaches its correct outbound destination without damage or delay.
- Heavy Freight Movement: Execute safe team lifts and individual carries on packages weighing up to 150 pounds using UPS-approved ergonomic techniques, mechanical hoists, hand trucks, and roller conveyors to move freight from receiving through the sort floor to outbound staging.
- Special Handling Compliance: Identify and process packages requiring special handling — high-value, fragile, hazmat-adjacent, or oversized — following UPS-specific routing and packaging protocols that prevent damage and ensure regulatory compliance throughout the freight's journey.
- Non-Conveyable Routing: Stage non-conveyable freight in the correct outbound lane alongside the sort team's conveyor output, communicating trailer assignments with the shipping associate team to confirm every piece of heavy freight loads into the correct outbound vehicle before departure.
Benefits & Perks
UPS Freight Handlers earn a meaningful pay premium above standard handler Teamsters wages reflecting the physical demands and special handling skill required. All mechanical assist and equipment operation training is fully funded by UPS on-site at no cost to the associate.
