Role Overview & Responsibilities

As a UPS Flow Control Worker, you manage the real-time package induction rate and sort floor labor distribution inside our fulfillment center — using the Sort Manager software dashboard, direct radio communication with belt supervisors, and floor observation to maintain optimal throughput velocity without creating downstream chute overflow or outbound staging bottlenecks.

• Induction Rate Management: Monitor and adjust the package induction rate at the primary belt feed point — slowing induction when downstream chutes are nearing overflow capacity, accelerating induction when outbound staging is depleted and trailer loaders are waiting — maintaining the 92 to 97 percent belt utilization rate that maximizes throughput without triggering systemic backups.
• Real-Time Labor Redistribution: Communicate with sort supervisors via two-way radio to redirect sorter headcount from cleared destination chutes to backing-up zones during volume surges — moving associates between belt positions within 90 seconds of a chute overflow alert to prevent the cascading jam that forces a belt shutdown.
• Departure Board Coordination: Track all outbound trailer departure times on the dock management board simultaneously, escalating to the sort manager when throughput rates project a specific trailer will not clear by its departure window — triggering the overtime authorization or labor addition decision before the departure window is missed rather than after.
