About UPS & Our Culture
Loading a UPS package car is not a task — it is a craft. An expertly loaded delivery vehicle is the difference between a driver who runs 180 stops efficiently and a driver who loses 45 minutes searching for missequenced packages in a chaotic load. Our Package Loaders are the specialists who build those vehicles — mastering the UPS load methodology to a level of proficiency that experienced drivers will specifically request when they have a choice of who is assigned to their cars. At UPS, package loader jobs are the most method-intensive handler role in the building, commanding a genuine professional identity that extends beyond the physical work into the operational partnership between the loader and the driver whose entire day depends on the quality of the load built the night before.
What Our Team Says (Employee Reviews)
"My driver tells me every Friday that I run the cleanest cars in the building — and that means more to me professionally than any other performance metric on the dashboard. Loading is a craft once you understand the eDDR sequence system, the shelf addressing structure, and the weight distribution principles that keep heavy packages floor-level and fragile packages protected. I am faster and more accurate now than I was at 90 days because the method keeps improving as you own it. The Teamsters wage and benefits for a skilled package loader job at UPS are the strongest hourly compensation I have found for work at this physical skill level." - Current Package Loader, Tulsa, OK.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
As a UPS Package Loader, you specialize in outbound delivery vehicle load construction during the preload or night sort shift inside our package center — building package car loads in exact delivery stop sequence using the eDDR system, fragility rules, air package priority standards, and load quality walk-around protocols that produce the cleanest possible load for the driver assigned to each vehicle.
- eDDR Sequence Load Mastery: Build each assigned package car load in exact Electronic Daily Delivery Record stop sequence — reading the eDDR shelf position codes (A1 through E8) for every package at belt induction, placing each parcel with label facing outward in its correct shelf slot, and completing the full load without reversals, missequenced packages, or packages loaded into the wrong vehicle across your entire assigned car count for the shift.
- Fragility & Special Handling Placement: Identify fragile, high-value, perishable, and oversized packages at the sort belt and apply the correct special handling placement protocol — fragile packages placed top-shelf in the package car with label-up orientation and protective separation from heavy freight, high-value packages loaded in the driver's secure lock box, and refrigerated perishables grouped near the bulkhead door for minimal transit time exposure.
- Pre-Departure Load Walk-Around: Conduct a systematic pre-departure load walk-around inspection of each assigned vehicle in the 10 minutes before the driver arrival window — opening each shelf section, scanning a random 15-percent sample of packages against the eDDR to verify sequence integrity, identifying and immediately correcting any misloaded packages before the driver checks in to prevent a misload that generates a service failure credit and a customer complaint.
Benefits & Perks
UPS Package Loaders receive Teamsters union wages, full medical, dental, and vision benefits through the Teamsters Health & Welfare Fund, pension accrual, paid personal days, and Earn & Learn tuition assistance. Package Loaders who consistently achieve above-average load quality scores — fewer than 0.5 misloads per 1,000 packages loaded — are among the first considered for Lead Associate designation and the pay premium that comes with formal recognition of loader expertise.
